A PCC is the governing body of a Church of England parish. It plays a vital role in the life and administration of the church, working alongside the clergy to support and promote the church’s mission. Essentially we are the legal and spiritual body that helps ensure the smooth and faithful running of St. Michael's Church Boldmere, balancing practical responsibilities with a shared commitment to the Christian faith and community life.
The key responsibilities of a PCC include:
Mission and Ministry Support:
The PCC helps shape the spiritual direction of the church, supporting worship, outreach, discipleship, and pastoral care. It works with the clergy to promote the church’s mission within the parish.
Financial Oversight:
The PCC is responsible for managing the church’s finances. This includes preparing an annual budget, overseeing income and expenditure, and ensuring good stewardship of resources.
Church Fabric and Property:
The PCC must ensure that church buildings and grounds are maintained in good condition. Any significant repairs or alterations usually require approval from the PCC and, sometimes, the diocese.
Safeguarding and Compliance:
It ensures that safeguarding policies are in place to protect children and vulnerable adults. The PCC must also comply with data protection, health and safety, and other legal requirements.
Personnel and Staffing:
The PCC may be involved in employing lay workers, managing volunteers, and supporting the work of churchwardens and other officers.
Communication and Representation:
It represents the views of the congregation and works as a channel between the parish and the wider Church of England structures.
We usually meet around 10 times a year. Meeting tend to be held in the South Aisle, at St Michael's Church on a Thursday evening from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Occasionally, if important matters need to be dealt more expediently, additional extra-ordinary meetings are setup either face-to-face or virtual. These may be on weekday evenings or even at the weekend. Refreshments are usually available during the meeting. PCC members are not expected to attend every single meeting, and minutes are circulated after each meeting to allow absent members to catch-up.
The PCC includes clergy, churchwardens, and elected lay members from the congregation. Members are usually elected at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM). Usually individuals will require someone in the congregation to propose and second their nomination. The last APCM was held in May 2025. However, in exceptional circumstances, someone can be co-opted onto the PCC mid-term.
